However, researchers at the University of Arizona have recently taken a huge step by creating a holographic display that can show videos in real time. This means that soon employers will be able to take telecommuting to the next level. Businesswomen will be able to give important presentations from across the country and health professionals will be able to take part in medical procedures without stepping inside a hospital.

Holographic videos seem to be the stuff of futuristic movies. Yet, the technology has been around for a while. However, until recently people were only able to display static holographic images. The researchers at U. of Arizona set up 16 different cameras that capture 16 different angles in a semi-circle around the subject. They focus a laser onto a special piece of photoreactive polymer. This plastic changes light into electrical charges that create and store images. The light then bounces off the plastic and brings the image to the recipient. The new plastic helps researchers to re-draw the image about every 2 seconds. Previously, the most advanced technology could only redraw the image every 4 minutes. Scientists are hoping that more development will allow them to achieve a real-time video that refreshes every 30 seconds.

One of the best aspects of this technology is that the holographic images and videos can be sent over the internet in less than a second. This makes it possible for remote employees to create a "holographic telepresence" and allow them to be an integral part of the work culture even if they work off-site.
